In 2003, the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park was inscribed onto the UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site List based on its unique geological values and karst landscape. A mere 12 years later, the inscription was confirmed and another criteria added: that for biodiversity values. Amongst visitors, the National Park and its surroundings are particularly known for the many different caves found in this area.

Quang Binh Province features beautiful nature: the National Park to the east, the ocean with some pristine beaches to the west, karst and mountain landscape. It also has a lively history as well as there are many different minority groups that live secluded in the more mountaineous areas.

Dong Hoi and Phong Nha are the gateways to the Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park and there are nowadays many guided tours on offer. These range from the exploration of smaller wet caves to caves that feature huge caverns and world-record passages, from hiking through lighter forest to trekking in deeper, physically challenging jungle areas.  How to choose the most suitable tour depends on your time, fitness, budget and on the current weather conditions ;).

Inside the cave, you will walk on a 1km wooden walk path. After lunch, you will visit Phong Nha Cave, which features the longest underground river in South-East Asia, and which is also widely known within Vietnam for the role it played during the 2nd Indochina War. An overnight tour to a cave with unusual calcite formations. Located within the Strictly Protected Area of the Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park, you will not only explore unique caves, but also trek through a pristine forest environment.

The first day will start with a short briefing at the operator´s office in Phong Nha. After a short drive out of the village, the trek starts with a steep walk down until reaching a dry stream bed. Hiking through dry and wet passages dotted with blue pools, Nuoc Nut Cave then connects to Hang Va. Around 100m of swimming need to be done before climbing out to the entrance, reaching your camp for the night. Enjoy the evening at a BBQ dinner together with your guides and porters.

TOUR 20: Son Doong Expedition: Phong Nha - Hang En - Hang Son Doong - Phong Nha

Reserve here

It may seem a little unusual, but...we have been frequenly asked about the visitation of Son Doong and so we also include this little description in the following. Please, note that Son Doong can only be visited as part of a tour which is due to the fact that the cave is located within the Strictly Protected Area of the Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park as well as due to safety reasons.

It is not for everyone, but it is a tour once in a lifetime - the exploration of Hang Son Doong, the cave with the largest cave passage found in the world to date. A lot of discovery awaits you, including cave ceiling collapses, a unique underground forest, the traversion of rivers, 90m of scaling down the ´Great Wall of Vietnam´ with ropes and ladders, the exploration of Hang En (with the 3rd largest cavern in the world) and more. It is therefore not wondering that the tour is made to last 4 days/3 nights.

Before the day of the tour start, there will be a mandatory safety briefing at the operator`s office in Phong Nha in the late afternoon. You will also have to bring your belongings needed for the four days with you. These will be stored by the porters. A dinner is then served.

Make sure you will have a full breakfast before being picked up at your guesthouse/hotel the next morning. There will then be a 45-minutes drive to the trailhead. On this first day, you will make a lot of trekking and stay overnight inside Hang En, the cave with the 3rd largest cavern in the world. At the end of this day, the safety team will also define whether or not you will physically be able to make it for the next few days. If you will not be permitted to continue, you will have to return to Phong Nha (costs will be forfeited).

After breakfast, you will discover the beautiful exit of Hang En. After an hour walk through the nearby river, you will climb a steep hill, fit your safety harness and prepare for your underground journey into Son Soong. On your way to the first campsite in the first large passage, you´ll have to be careful, scrambling over boulders along a rocky path, but you´ll be rewarded with some wonderful views.

The next day, breakfast will be served at around 8:00am. The morning will be about rocky climbs and some difficult passages, until reaching the location ´Watch Out for Dinosaurs´, a litte jungle that developed within the cave. Explore ´Green Gours´ and sight the first doline while having lunch. A walk through gigantic cave formations and seeing many cave pearls, you will catch sight of the second doline where another jungle is waiting for you. This will be crossed and the 3rd camp will be reached in the early afternoon. A little more exploration around the campsite will be done until dinner. There are many great photo opportunities.

On your final day, you will ascend the steep ´Great Wall of Vietnam´, using a combination of ladders and ropes in three sections. On top, a light lunch will be served before passing more flowstones and cave pearls. Then, you will slowly hike back to the trailhead.

Discovered in 2009 by the local Ho Khanh, you will be able to explore this unique cave and landscape, including 17km of trekking, 8km of caving, 800m of elevation change, and the aforementioned 90m climb at the ´Great Wall of Vietnam´. As space is limited and as the operator is only able to acquire a permission by the National Park authorities on a yearly basis, it is recommendable to plan well in advance. Sometimes, you may also be lucky and single spots may suddenly become available. You may just write us, if you are interested.

Note that the itinerary is subject to change depending on the weather.

TOUR 21: DMZ Transfer: Dong Hoi or Phong Nha - Vinh Moc Tunnels - Ben Hai River Museum - Hue (1/2 Day): 500.000VND

Reserve here If you want to travel onwards from Dong Hoi or Phong Nha to Hue and visit the former DMZ (Demilitarised Zone) on the way, then this 'tour' is a good choice. Though not a ´tour´ in its classic sense (there is no guide on the bus), you will be able to get a good first impression of the area. Initially, you will drive around 85km south of Dong Hoi to visit the Vinh Moc Tunnels where you will be able to spend ~50mins to explore the sight. The tunnels were built and used by local villagers who sought refuge from US air bombardments between 1967 to 1972. While the size of the tunnels cannot be compared to those of the Cu Chi Tunnels nearby Saigon, Vinh Moc allows for some more quietness and thoughts while visiting. After, you will make your way to the Ben Hai River Museum, a simple museum set up next to the 17th parallel, commemorating war times. Here, you will have about 30-40 minutes to visit, before heading to Hue. Places to visit: Dong Hoi - Vinh Moc Tunnels - Ben Hai River - Hue Operating: daily and all year round Pick up from Phong Nha: ~6:45h - 7:30h Pick up from Dong Hoi: ~7:45h - 8:15h Drop off: ~13:00h at 21 Doi Cung Street (DMZ Hotel), Hue Group size: max. 20 people Operated by: Sy's Homestay Phong Nha Min. age: no min. age Price: 500.000VND/person What to bring along? Just yourself and your luggage for onward travel ;). There is a bottle of water provided, but just in case, take some extra water along. What is included in the tour price? transportation, entry tickets to the Vinh Mooc Tunnels and to the Ben Hai River Museum (lunch is not included) Why should I book this tour? The DMZ (the Vinh Mooc Tunnels) is yet slightly complicated to visit on your own (unless you have a motorbike). Once you leave from Phong Nha or Dong Hoi towards Hue, it is also not really cheaper, taking costs for transport into account (e.g. from Dong Ha to the tunnels). It also takes a little longer time (needed for changing/waiting for transport modes). If you are interested further in the DMZ and have time, you could either think about staying in Dong Hoi (the choice of operators is still limited), in Dong Ha or you make your way back to the DMZ again from Hue. How can you book a tour with the Tree Hugger?

To book a tour with the Tree Hugger, follow the 'reserve here' button. We kindly ask you to complete an online reservation form. We will then confirm availability and the booking of your tour via e-mail. For any questions you may have, just e-mail us at treehuggervietnam@gmail.com.

Are tours available all year round?

Tours to most of the caves run all year round, weather-permitting (there may be days where tours are not running, i.e. in the rainy season and in the winter between around late August and the end of January). The more adventurous/trekking tours are usually not running in the rainy season.

What do I need to bring for a daily tour?

A camera (make sure to carry something for water protection; for overnight tours or tours where rivers are crossed, water-proof boxes are offered), closed shoes for comfortable walking (for trekking tours, plastic sandals with good grip can be provided, some operators also offer simple trekking shoes for sizes 36-45), swimming wear and a towel (if swimming is involved), insect repellent, hat/sun glasses, sunscreen, long-sleeved shirts/long pants.

What do I need to take along for an overnight tour?

A camera (for trekking tours, water-proof boxes are offered), closed shoes for comfortable walking (for trekking tours, plastic sandals with good grip can be provided, some operators also offer simple trekking shoes until size 45), swimming wear and a towel (if swimming is involved), insect repellent, hat/sun glasses, sunscreen, long-sleeved shirts/long pants, maybe shorts and a shirt/sweater to wear at the campsite, toiletries, other personal items.

Are there more tours available other than the ones described here?

Yes, there are. We have tried to cover most of the tours that enter the Park or around it, but as Phong Nha’s tourism is growing, there are also increasingly more tours being offered.

Is there a minimum/maximum number of participants for a tour?

Most of the tours require participation of at least 2 people which is usually not an issue ;). For more common/classic tours, the maximum of participants would depend on the size of the transporter (~14 people + 1 guide). If the number of participants is rising, another transporter or small bus with another guide would usually be made available. In the shoulder or low seasons, you may often find only a few people joining. For trekking tours, the maximum number of participants is fixed. Depending on the tour, the limit is between 8-16 people. These tours can easily be booked out in the summer time, so make sure to plan a little ahead then ;).

Is there a minimum/maximum age for participation in the tours?

For tours that cover the more ‘common caves’, such as Phong Nha, Paradise or Dark Cave, there is no age restriction. Adventure Tours mostly have age restrictions (between 8-16 years).

Where do I get picked up for a tour?

The tours usually start from Dong Hoi, and so you can choose where you want to be picked up from within Dong Hoi City. As most tours will pass by Phong Nha village anyway, pick up can also be arranged from any accommodation here.

How can I pay for the tour?

You can either pass by the Tree Hugger at 30 Nguyen Du in Dong Hoi before the start of your tour or use paypal (treehuggervietnam@gmail.com).

What is usually included in the price of the tours?

Depending on what kind of tour you are booking and with what operator you are going with, there are different things included, e.g. transport (either from Dong Hoi or from Phong Nha), English speaking tour guide, lunch, entrance tickets, other transportation within the tour (e.g. boat or golf buggy), drinking water, and wet tissues. For trekking tours, other things may come on top, e.g. simple trekking shoes/ sandals, porters, other meals/snacks, other trekking equipment etc. In addition to that, operators are charged for every visitor accessing treks within the National Park forest by the National Park Management. Depending on the zone of the Park, these fees can vary from around 10$-660US$.

What are booking conditions/ cancellation policies?

Booking conditions and cancellation policies may vary from operator to operator. The Tree Hugger books tours, but rights, cancellation policies and responsibilities for the tours apply according to the operator you take your tour with.

How do I get from Dong Hoi to Phong Nha, if my tour starts in Phong Nha?

All tours that can be found on our website start from Dong Hoi, except for the ´Paradise Cave 7km´ tour. There would be the following options:

rental car: you will drive early in the morning from Dong Hoi to Paradise Cave and the driver of the car will wait for your return. This is 900.000VND.

taxi: this works similar to the rental car. The fixed price can vary and also depends on how long the driver will have to wait for you at Paradise Cave to return. The price will be around 950.000VND.

motorbike: if you stay in Phong Nha, then a motorbike is a good way to reach Paradise Cave. Allow around 30-40 minutes for the way. We would not recommend to take a motorbike from Dong Hoi as the route is fairly long and the tour can be tiring ;).
